Isn't this just the most perfect Christmas movie? It has it all - great cast, great story, great direction and charm to spare. However, I must admit that there is one aspect of the film that  repeatedly tiptoes into my dreams...
And that is that Jimmy Stewart is impossibly adorable and romantic here.
Now, Margaret Sullavan is pretty adorable herself (I just love her voice). But, if I were Klara, I would have snagged Jimmy on day one. one of that cat and mouse stuff for me.
If that didn't work, I would have been more than thrilled to have an impromptu Viennese dinner with him and would NOT have sat with my back to him!
I would have totally dressed for the occasion when he visited me in my sick bed (I'm thinking Harlow here, girls).
And I would NOT have even thought of getting him that music box as a gift!
But, thanks to Ernst Lubitsch, alls well that ends well. Klara finally gets her man.

But, in my dreams, this is how it would have started, not ended!

Merry Christmas and may all the stars, both movie and otherwise, shine brightly for you this season!

  1. Hey FlickChick, I always get a little thrill when I go to my Google Reader and see that "My Movie Dream Book" has posted something new. Thanks for all the fun posts you've made this year. Happiest of holidays to you and your dreams.

  2. O, thank you, Martin! Happiest of holidays to you, too, and may 2012 bring all of your literary dreams to fruition!

  3. Hello FlickChick, I stumbled upon your site while searching for "The Shop Around the Corner" photos. This is a great place! I'll definitely be back for more. :)

  4. Dear FlickChick,

Hello from the Pure Entertainment Preservation Society. This is a very unusual and fascinating way to discuss a movie! I've quite often thought what I would or wouldn't have done as a character in a movie. I agree that Jimmy Stewart's character is sweet, charming, and handsome, and I don't think I would have been so unkind to him. However, if Klara had fallen for him immediately, the story's main focus would have been eliminated, and there would have been very little left. I suppose this is why it took Klara and Mr. Vardash so long to get together.

I, Rebekah Brannan, have not participated much in the blog world in the past, but I intend to become more involved now.

I would like very much for you to participate in my upcoming blogathon, The Singing Sweethearts Blogathon, which will be my first real participation in PEPS. This blogathon, which will be hosted around Valentine's Day, is celebrating the famous singing team Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy.

You can read the rules of the blogathon at: If you want to join, please comment and tell me your topic, if you have chosen one. I hope you'll join me in honoring this brilliant team and the holiday of love!
